Kia launched the Carens on Feb 15th with starting price of Rs 8.99 Lakhs all the way up to Rs 16.99 Lakhs(ex-showroom). Kia has priced Carens very aggressively though these are introductory prices, Kia may increase the price later. Kia Carens is a mixture of an MPV and SUV according to Kia so it competes against the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga, Maruti Suzuki XL6 and the Hyundai Alcazar. Today we will compare the Kia Carens and Maruti Suzuki XL6, though XL6 and Ertiga are almost similar in terms of engine, platform, dimensions but differ in features, design and seat configuration and XL6 is a premium MPV offering from Maruti Suzuki so we decided to compare it against the Carens.
Kia Carens, MS XL6 dimensions:
As you can see from the above chart that Carens is slightly bigger when compared to XL6, offers more wheelbase and decent ground clearance, not complaining at which their target customer is.
Kia Carens, MS XL6 engine specifications:
Kia Carens get 3 engine options whereas XL6 gets only one 1.5L Petrol engine, Carens gets a 1.5L Petrol, 1.5L Diesel that produces 115hp and 250Nm of torque and a 1.4L Turbo petrol which produces 140hp and 172Nm. Kia Carens gets an advantage as it offers Diesel engine as an option but XL6 doesn't, gets petrol only. But if you're looking for a Petrol MPV that produces better mileage then you could go with the XL6/Ertiga as they produce good mileage figures and they also come with Smart Hybrid technology whereas Carens doesn't offer any mild Hybrid config.
Kia Carens Petrol engine is paired with a 6 speed Manual across all engines and Diesel gets a 6 speedTorque converter based AT, Turbo petrol gets a 7 speed dual clutch transmission option.
XL6 Petrol engine is offered with 5 speed manual and 4 speed Torque converter Automatic transmission.
Kia Carens, MS XL6 variants:
Carens is offered in 6 variants, Premium, Prestige, Prestige plus, Luxury, Luxury Plus 6 seater, Luxury Plus 7 seater. Kia is offering both 6 and 7 seater options with the Carens.
XL6 is offered in Alpha and Zeta variants. XL6 is offered only with 6 seater option, for 7 seater you have to go with the Ertiga.

Carens comes with a lot of safety features which are standard across all the variants like ABS, EBD, Electronic stability control, VSM, brake assists, 6 Airbags, hill assists, all wheel disc brakes, tyre pressure monitor.
Maruti Suzuki XL6 safety features:
ABS, EBD, dual Airbags, ESC(AT only), ISOFIX child seats, smart hybrid technology, Hill hold(AT).
By the feature list Kia Carens gets loads of features when compared to XL6, Carens get both option of 6 & 7 seater options, XL6 gets only 6 seater only, for 7 seater you have to go with Ertiga but it is not premium as XL6. When it comes to safety, Kia Carens doesn't have any NCAP rating and by Kia's other car records we don't expect Carens will get high safety ratings. On the other hand XL6 too doesn't have any official NCAP rating, as XL6 is based on Ertiga platform and it secured 3 starts at Global NCAP.
Kia has just got the right pricing and will attract lot of customers, Kia will sell it in good numbers. XL6 does almost 3k sales per month, but it's sibling Ertiga tops the sale.
